8th Grade Science

Objective: To prepare each student to successfully complete the science curriculum through lecture and hands-on activities. Each student will be prepared to advance to high school science. Each student will be prepared to successfully take the State 8th grade Science Test.

Supplies: ½" or 1" 3-ring binder for lab activities (left in classroom), loose leaf paper only (no spiral bound notebooks), pencils or pens (blue or black ink only). Through out the year other items will be needed. These will be items that can mostly be found at home such as empty 2 liter soda bottles and various other items. Although some items will need to be purchased, there will be ample notice.

Class Rules:

1. Be on time and in YOUR seat BEFORE the Tardy Bell rings.

2. Do not talk without permission

3. Come to class with the appropriate materials

4. Begin work immediately

5. Be on task at all times

Daily Science Trivia: Daily Trivia game to provide opportunities to engage and check student’s science knowledge. Students will have the opportunity to acquire bonus points or other awards for correct answers.

Bell Ringers: Daily opportunities for students to apply information learned to questions posed on the board. These are graded daily and count 10% of a student’s average.

Lab Activities: Various lab activities will be utilized most days to check students understanding of science lessons as well as engage students in hands-on activities. Some of these involve presentations. These are graded and count 20% of a student’s average.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given each Friday to check students understanding of the week’s information. Pop quizzes may be given at other times if understanding is not evident.

Engrade: www.engrade.com is the online gradebook I use. Each student will be provided an access code that enables them to log onto my webpage. They then must setup their own username and password. The username and password should be shared with parents to provide students and parents the opportunity to check engrade looking at grades, averages, attendance, and upcoming lessons. Students and parents may also use engrade to send me messages and communicate with me concerning their child.

School Website:  You can get all notes and other assignments from my web page.  Go to www.mantachiehighschool.com and click on "Teacher Feature." Then click on "Noah Hamilton," and click on "Web Page."  Students who do not have access to computers at home with have ample opportunities at school to use computers in the library or the computer lab to download assignments and notes.

Make-up Work: Students who are absent must check folders that are on the bulletin board to get missed work. Students have 5 days from the day they return to make up work or make arrangements to complete the missed work. Work not made-up in a timely manner will be given a zero (0). After this time frame, students will not be allowed to make up work with out prior approval from the teacher.

Oscar: Oscar the Owl provides science facts that may be used as bonus questions on tests and quizzes.
